The nectary of Rosmarinus officinalis L. has the form of a four-lobed, asymmetrical disc situated around the base of the ovary. The nectary lobe facing the lower flower lip is enlarged and is the only one to have modified stomata. Vascular strands consisting of phloem only occur in the nectariferous tissue. It is suggested that the pre-nectar originating in the phloem accumulates primarily as starch grains in plastids of the nectariferous cells. The number of grains is very large before anthesis and decreases considerably at anthesis. The transport of the pre-nectar to the various nectariferous cells appears to be mainly via the symplast. It could not be determined whether the process of elimination of the nectar is solely eccrine or partly granulocrine.
